    SUNET has signed agreements with Imtech Telecom in order to build a nationwide optical transmission - and router network. The agreement runs over 12 years and is calculated initially to be worth approximately £22M.

    • 18th December 2006 – SUNET (Swedish University Computer Network) with the agreement will provide all colleges and universities in Sweden with the world's most powerful university network “OptoSUNET” that will deliver clear transfer speeds up to 40 Gbit/s. Optical transport technology makes it possible for large traffic transfers with a fiber handling up to 192 wavelengths and 40 Gbit/s, against the 2,5 Gbit/s that is possible in SUNETs network today.
      The optical transmission provides also a possibility that ways up s.k point to point bonds average different connections in the net then changes in bandwidth requirement arises at the members. The agreement with Imtech Telecom is strategic and long term allowing time to build a powerful and sophisticated network that will last and be flexible to fit all our member’s needs during many years. We have found that Imtech Telecom is that supplier that meets our high requirements on quality, flexibility and performance in the network to the lowest cost and that therefore is best suited to build this next generation's university network says Wallberg, development's - and responsible for co-ordination for SUNET. In order to meet SUNETs high requirements have we chosen optic transmission from Ciena and central routers from Juniper Networks. Imtech Telecom delivers a complete solution inclusive of installation and maintenance.
