UKERNA’S NETWORKSHOP 35, 2007
Networkshop is THE technical conference and adjacent trade exhibition dedicated to Higher and Further Education network staff in the UK. It is sponsored by UKERNA and has been an annual event since 1972.

This year’s event, April 3rd - 5th was held at the University of Exeter campus, where J K Rowling studied French with Greek and German. Fittingly the Networkshop dinner was held at the Majestic ‘Great Hall’, attended by over 500 delegates and exhibitors alike. The exhibition attracted around 100 industry players including Imtech, Alcatel-Lucent, Juniper Networks, Ciena and most of the major IT vendors.

Apart from renewing contacts with familiar faces the Imtech stand attracted significant new leads. It featured Alcatel-Lucent and the Lancaster University ‘network story’ prominently, showing the progression from the core network upgrade by Juniper to the latest network management tools by Alcatel-Lucent.

Imtech Telecom promoted the success of LLU within the Lancs area and displayed on the stand a Stinger Access Concentrator of which the technical attendees always seem to enjoy prodding around inside. The event is the perfect platform to gain news of up and coming Network planning and upgrades across the Research & Education community. Imtech is looking forward to another prosperous year of R&E networks and meeting next year for further discussions on UKERNA’s network.

UK ‘MUST INCREASE BROADBAND INVESTMENT’
Ministers and regulators have just two years to find ways of encouraging investment in the next generation of high-speed broadband or the UK’s competitiveness will suffer, according to the Broadband Stakeholder Group.

• The Group’s latest report warns that current internet access networks will be too sluggish to meet the demands of bandwidth-hungry businesses and households by 2012

• BT’s 21st century fixed-line network will offer 24 mbps from 2008

• Virgin Media plans to offer up to 20 mbps from June and is testing a 50 mbps service

• France Telecom is trialing broadband speeds of up to 100 mbps in Paris

• Deutsche Telekom plans to offer speeds of up to 50 mbps in 50 German cities in 2008

IPTV – Future Driver of the Broadband Market?
Motorola research claims that almost half of all Europeans in France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the UK watch TV over the internet. Up to 45 per cent of European broadband subscribers expect to use other services, such as video calling, from their TVs.
